the private talked earlier about the unions, back in the 1970's, the unions were yelling to buy american. now they're having commercials on tv to buy american. host: we're going to move on to mark on the line for independents. caller: a want to ask if he thinks the house will address the $60 billion package from the senate with all of the pork in it? those congress -- does congress need to start cutting the extra pork out of their budgets? guest: i do not think the house will pass the measure with all the spending. it is tough to say right now. the reason a lot of this pork is in the bill is to pass it in the senate. it is not coincidental there is money that goes to alaska. it is not coincidental there is money for mississippi in the gulf coast region and the gulf coast and those senators voted for the bill. it is easy to say that is pork spending. to get it through, sometimes they have to make this compromises. it is part of being effective in the senate and house, making those deals. the amount of spending for non- sandy-related things is small. host: jane is from new york on the line

so i have seen companies with unions and without unions and unions trying to come in. i have been through pretty much a whole shebang. i ended my career as a vice president of engineering. my thoughts, from seeing all this, from an independent point of view, is the company should offer profit sharing to the people. if they want to give everybody a piece of the pie, give them some profit-sharing, because i have seen people go years without pay. selective people get higher pay because they are liked, etc.. host: what do you think that would do, for company to do that, what happens to them over time? what is the benefit of profit sharing? caller: the benefit is the better the workers do, the better the company does. everybody does better. it's very simple. but if i could say one more thing, you previously had the thing about representatives in , people coming up against john boehner. apparently there is a union forming within the republican congress to oust their leader, their boss. so that is an independent point of view. host: all right, some other headlines. the washin

i was a union steward. we were kind of forced to retire will we get a certain age because what they're trying to do, try to weed out all the people who have been there since the private sector and people from the outside are always citing federal employees -- i only made $39,000 after 20 years of service. we do not make a lot of money. cutting cost of living rage -- wait 30 years ago. all of them calling and saying federal employees get some much of this or that, that is not so. the only thing we get -- they went to this new performance system. if the supervisor likes you, no matter how much good work or what you do on the computer, they can't tell how much you put out of production, but if they like you they will give you a higher score and you get a raise. now what they are doing at the exchange, they are acting like, we got almost 500 people coming out as a cut on retirement of the new people coming in -- they did not get new benefits, they did not get the health insurance pay. so why would the people in
